The January 31 High Energy Theory Postdoc Accord

A common postdoc acceptance deadline is critical for establishing a standard of equity and fairness in hiring and recruiting practices, allowing applicants to make life and career decisions with the maximum amount of information at their disposal.

In support of this common goal, signatories of this Postdoc Accord hereby agree to the following:

  1. The signatory, on behalf of their research group, agrees to make no postdoctoral offer whose acceptance deadline is earlier than January 31st for a position which starts later that calendar year.  This deadline is subject to two exceptions:

  • In years when January 31st falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the deadline shall be the last Friday prior.

  • In years when January 31st coincides with the Lunar New Year or Lunar New Year’s Eve, the deadline shall be the last working day prior to Lunar New Year’s Eve.
The resulting calendar of deadlines for 2026-2050 can be found below.

  1. The accord will be signed by the current head of the research group or representative thereof, on behalf of the research group as a whole.  It is understood that the signature remains valid if the group leadership rotates to somebody else, unless the signature is withdrawn explicitly.

  2. This Postdoc Accord will supersede any previous accords signed by an institution.

  3. This accord does not apply to multidisciplinary fellowships and other funding sources whose timing is outside the control of individual research groups.
